Title
The Ivoryton Store
Subject
Bicentennial quilt; Ivoryton Store; Ivoryton, Connecticut
Description
What is now known as the Ivoryton Store on Main Street in the village of Ivoryton, began as a partnership between Franklin M. Rose and Theodore F. Rose, under the firm name of Rose Brothers. This partnership was formed in March 1878 when they bought the business of Charles L. Clark, located at the same site they occupied.
The Rose Brothers dealt in general merchandise of every description. This included dry goods, dress material, groceries, hardware, tinware and almost every need of the community. At that time the Ivoryton post office was located there, as Theodore Rose was postmaster.
More recently living quarters have been made available over the store. When the Rose Brothers conducted the business there, plays, dances, and debates were held upstairs. It is also recorded that the Union Sunday School classes were held in the upper rooms beginning on November 9, 1879.
